
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26th, 1926 - October 18 20th, 2000) was an American singer and actress whose career spanned more than 40 years. London was a torch singer who was known for her smooth, soft voice. She recorded more than 30 albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. The song she sang on "Cry Me a River" which she released on her debut album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was nominated in 1974 to the Golden Globe Award as a actor for her performance in Emergency! of Dixie McCall. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she started her acting career. London's 35 year acting career began with film in 1944. It included roles as the female lead role in a variety of westerns. In the mid-50s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional music career. The album she released was her last studio album in 1969 but achieved continuing success playing the lead female character of nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) In the show, she was with her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
