Khan was raised as the daughter of a Catholic. She was educated at her school, the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church Elementary School. She attributes her passion for music to her grandma who first introduced her to jazz when she was a young girl. Khan began to be a huge fan of rhythm and blues music when she was a teenager and, at eleven formed a girl group the Crystalettes that included her sister Taka. While many people claim that Khan was named Chaka when she joined the Panthers however, she claims that her name was given by Yoruba Baba gave her the name Chaka Adunne Aduffe Karifi at 13 years old. She left in 1969 the Panthers and quit high school after having attended Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). Within the Chicago region, she began performing in small groups. The first band she joined was Cash McCall's Lyfe together with Hassan Khan. Chaka and Hassan got married in 1970.
